Should I buy Japan Rail Pass? 2010/3/2 03:06
Hi,

I'm planning to make the following trips and was wondering if it would be better to get a rail pass?

- Tokyo to Nikko (with return)
- Tokyo to Kyoto (one way)
- Kyoto to Himeji (with return)
- Kyoto to Nagoya airport (one way)

Any advice on this and is there an easy way to determine the costs of these trips myself?

Thanks

To see if you will get value from a JR Pass you have to think in YEN: so use Hyperdia to check out the cost of you possible trips and then see if they add up to the cost of a 7 day pass: 28300YEN:
I just did a quick check on Hyperdia, and using JR to go to Nikko via Utsunomiya, and the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Himeji, a 7 day pass will pay off, combined with the trip to Kyoto, and Nagoya: you can't go to Nagoya airport with JR: Kyoto to Nagoya on JR then local to the airport
