Hiroshima/Miyajima itinerary 2010/3/12 15:44
Hi,
I'll be making a day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima and Miyajima, arriving Hiroshima at about 9am. I want to do the hike up Mt Misen in Miyajima through the Daisho trail. Has anyone hiked it before? How long does it usually take? Here's my plan so far:

9am - catch tram to Hiroshima peace park
9:30am - Hiroshima peace museum, A bomb dome
11am - make my way to Miyajima guchi for ferry to Miyajima
12pm - lunch at Miyajima
12:30pm - Daisho hiking trail
2:30pm - Mount Misen
3pm - walk back down the mountation
5pm - Itsukushima shrine
6pm - hang around near the torii
7pm - ferry back to Hiroshima and dinner

I know it's a busy day and I'm fine with a fast paced travel. But is it doable? And how should I get from the peace park to Miyajima guchi? Is the JR line within walking distance? Lastly, does anyone know where I can get a timetable of the ferries and trams?

Thanks.

Yes, I have hiked it before. From the town to the summit it typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours:

You better check the ferry timetables:

I know it's a busy day and I'm fine with a fast paced travel. But is it doable?

Yes, it should be doable. In case you visit in winter, take note of sunset, as it might get dark before you descend from Misen. Also, it is always a good idea to check the tides. Both sunset and tide times can be looked up at the following website:

And how should I get from the peace park to Miyajima guchi?

For saving time, I strongly recommend the direct ferry, which I linked above.

Is the JR line within walking distance?

No. Please see the general situation on the following page:

Lastly, does anyone know where I can get a timetable of the ferries and trams?

Trams run every few minutes. No need to check. But if you want to look them up, neverthless, you can do so at Hypderdia:
http://www.hyperdia.com/
(the station closest to the Peace Park is Genbakudomemae)

The JR ferries between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima run also relatively frequent.

Thanks for the answers! How long does it take for the tram from Genbaku dome mae to Miyajima guchi? And is bus faster or tram from the Hiroshima station to the peace park?

How long does it take for the tram from Genbaku dome mae to Miyajima guchi?

What hindered you from using Hyperdia as I suggested? 48 minutes 270 yen by tram. 40 minute 430 yen by tram and JR via Shin-Inokuchi Station:

And is bus faster or tram from the Hiroshima station to the peace park?

I would never have thought about taking a bus instead of a tram if there is an choice. Maybe because I grew up in a city dominated by trams. If there is an alternative by bus, travel times are likely to be rather similar, except maybe during rush hours when buses might be slower.
