Shichigosan 2010/5/1 11:30
Shichigosan takes place on November 15 and is not a national holiday. On November 15 or the closest weekend, the young people visit a Shinto Shrine dressed up in kimono.

We can be in Kyoto on Saturday November 13 and 14: would Heian and Yasaka Shrines be very busy then, but good places to experience this festival? This appears to be the closest weekend, rather than the following one, by which time we'll have returned home.
Thank you.

a family event rather than a festivel 2010/5/2 22:04
Shichi-Go-San is a family event rather than a festivel. Few other people come to see it.
Shichi-Go-San literally means 7-5-3.
7 and 3 years old girls and 5 years old boys are taken to local shrines where there parents pray for their future.

The date is not strictly decided. On every weekend in November Shichi-Go-San can be seen.

You can see little girls (mostly 3 years old) wearing kimono and if you ask their parents to take their pictures, they will be happy to allow it. But that's all.

Thank you 2010/5/3 07:45
Many thanks: I wasn't sure if it was a festival type occasion, with large crowds, or as you have clarified.
Thanks again.
