I'm wondering if it is possible to change my visa status WITHOUT leaving the country. Is it possible to go to immigration and request that my visa is changed to a temporary visitor status? I tried to call them about this today but didn't have much luck explaining my situation. Thank you for your help.

I changed from a working visa to a tourist visa once quite a few years ago. It was no problem at all.

Lauren,
Yes, it is possible to switch your visa status from Working to Temporary Visitor at your local immigration office.
I don't think it is possible to get a Japan Rail Pass if you are already in Japan, though...
