Getting a Japan Rail Pass for seven day trip

I'll be going to Japan with the following itinerary:
Day 1-2: Tokyo
Day 3-5: Kyoto
Day 6: Nara
Day 7: Osaka
Is it cheaper to get a JR pass, a regional pass, or none at all?? And is the nicer class necessary/preferred for Westeners or is standard fine? Thanks!
