If a Ryokan advertises a guest room as having '8 tatami mats', does this imply that guests are in group accommodations of 8 people to a room? Or am I misinterpreting this? We are a couple trying to book accoms in a Ryokan and would prefer that the two of us have a room to ourselves.

A "Tatami Mat" is used as a unit of measure to indicate to you the size of the room. A Tatami mat is roughly 3 feet x 6 feet in size. So, an 8 Tatami Mat room would be roughly 12 feet by 12 feet. The wiki page might help too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TatamiIn most Ryokan you pay per person and it would be quite normal for the two of you to have a room to yourselves. It would be unusual in a Ryokan to share a bedroom with other guests. Some Ryokans do have shared bathrooms, others have a private toilet/bath (ensuite) attached to the room. Hope that clarifies it for you!
