Ryokan and group accommodation 2010/9/16 14:47
If a Ryokan advertises a guest room as having '8 tatami mats', does this imply that guests are in group accommodations of 8 people to a room? Or am I misinterpreting this? We are a couple trying to book accoms in a Ryokan and would prefer that the two of us have a room to ourselves.

A "Tatami Mat" is used as a unit of measure to indicate to you the size of the room. A Tatami mat is roughly 3 feet x 6 feet in size. So, an 8 Tatami Mat room would be roughly 12 feet by 12 feet.

The wiki page might help too.

In most Ryokan you pay per person and it would be quite normal for the two of you to have a room to yourselves. It would be unusual in a Ryokan to share a bedroom with other guests.

Some Ryokans do have shared bathrooms, others have a private toilet/bath (ensuite) attached to the room.

Hope that clarifies it for you!
