Alpine Route and Takayama

Hi,
I'm thinking of leaving Kanazawa early in the morning to Toyama to the Tateyama-Kurobe route and would then like to go from Matsumoto to Takayama in the evening (around 18:00). Hyperdia hasn't been helpful (it shows that a trip to Matsumoto alone would take 3hrs - but it says 1hr everywhere else I've read).
What transport should I take?

Which trip takes 1 or 3 hours?
The quickest connection between Takayama and Matsumoto is by bus (therefore not shown in hyperdia), but the last bus leaves Matsumoto around 5pm.
