Tsukiji Fish Market During December

I really want to go to Tsukiji Fish Market, especially for the early morning tuna auction, but I couldn't find a reliable source. Does anyone know if it's true that the auction is closed to the public during December? Also, I was planning of possibly sticking around the area starting at midnight. Is there any bar or manga places that are in walking distance to chill until 3:00 am or so? Lastly, any recommendations for some good sushi there?

Yes, the tuna auction has been closed over New Year over the last few years. The exact dates for 2012/2013 have not been announced yet, but it can be expected to be similar to the previous years:

2011/2012: December 1 to January 22
2010/2011: December 1 to January 22
2009/2010: December 10 to January 23
2008/2009: December 15 to January 17

I think it was around November 20 when they announced the exact dates on their website last year.
