Yugama Crater Lake

Dear Japan Guide Team,
I will be going to Japan in 8 days (24th of November 2012) and I wanted to do the trek to Mount Shirane (near Kusatsu) to see the Yugama Crater Lake.
The problem is they say that the road to Shirane is closed during winter, does it mean it's unaccessible at all or is there another alternative? Because I see a lot of photos taken with snow meaning people still get to go there around end of November, December and even January.

The road just got closed today or yesterday, so you can't get there by car or bus anymore. The ropeway is not running either until the end of the month. So, I am afraid there is no practical way to reach Yugama during this time of the year.
Theoretically you could hike there in many hours and partially through the snow, but this is not a practical solution.
