Overnight stop, Okayama - Nagoya

We'll be driving from Okayama to Nagoya in May and I'm looking for an interesting place (apart from Himeji/Kobe/Kyoto) to stay overnight, roughly half way. I guess that means somewhere just west of Kyoto in either Kyogo or Kyoto prefecture. Can anyone make a suggestion?
