If you're a member of AAA, traveler's cheques are free.
If you have large balance in your bank account, your bank never charge a fee for TCs.
Personally, I've never paid anything for TCs in my life.

I just exchanged money myself for a 9 day trip in July and I got about 10 2000 notes myself! But they gave me a spread of 10000, 1000, 5000, and 2000 notes so I just thought it was a common thing, but it was the first that I have ever seen of the 2000 note.

P.S. The bank charged me 0 percent transaction fee + was spot on to the current yen to USD ratio so I got 205,399 yen for 2,100.00 USD. Though if I need more money on my trip, I will use the ATMs.

I have been getting yens in hong kong every month, i'll see if i can get a few of these 2000 yen note.
All i have are 10000, 1000 and 5000.
