Re: Shinkansen transfer 2014/8/11 13:38
JapanBuff: You would just go down the escalator in the Tokyo Shinkansen Station then go back up the escalator to the correct track to Ueno.

Thatfs not correct.
In Tokyo Station, JR-Central and JR-East have different Shinkansen zones.
In order to make a transfer smoothly between JR-Central Tokaido Shinkansen and a JR-East Shinkansen line, passengers should pass through a gate between the two Shinkansen zones.
So, itfs not just going down and up escalators.

cf.
In Shin-Osaka Station, JR-West and JR-Central are using one Shinkansen zone, which is managed by JR-Central. There is no gate between the Shinkansen lines of JR-West and JR-Central. JR-West is managing the non-Shinkansen zone of Shin-Osaka Station.

Re: Shinkansen transfer station to Ueno 2014/8/11 23:25
omotenashi:
Thank you for the clarification on the Shinkansen gates between the two JR companies.

I am going to do this in reverse and would appreciate knowing which would be easier.

I have a JR Pass and will be going from Ueno to Kyoto. I have a large bag.

Which would be easier: Shinkansen from Ueno to Tokyo Station then transfer to Shinkansen for Kyoto.

or

JR Yamanote Line from Ueno to Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station then transfer to Shinkansen to Kyoto.
