iPhone in Japan to US 2013/5/6 14:23
Hi all,

I'll be studying abroad next year for a year. I was thinking of signing up for a 2 year contract with a phone service and getting the iPhone. Is it possible to do so, if yes, how much would it cost me to cancel my plan?

After I return to the US, will the phone work with US phone services?

Yes, but many outlets will only make the contract if you have a 3 year visa.

The early termination fee is roughly 20,000, but you'll also have to pay out the balance of the phone which will be about 20,000-40,000 yen.

Unlikely. The Japanese carriers don't unlock iphones, and sim unlocks are not reliably available enough to say that it would be a possibility in a year.

Overall you'll probably be better off buying an unlocked international model iphone and then using it with a prepaid sim like bmobile while in Japan.
