What tree is this common leaf from?

What tree is this common leaf from?

While traveling in Japan I saw a lot of the leaves that are split down the middle. Does anyone know what they are called or what tree they are from?

It is the leaf of the ginkgo tree (icho in Japanese). It happens to be the symbol of Tokyo.
