Japanese TV Shows - Text Covered

Why is in some TV shows, when the host reads something, parts of text are covered by pieces of paper, and then uncovered?
Is this a way to surprise whomever is watching with the information temporarily hidden?
I won't be able to sleep at night until I get to the bottom of this dilemma. Ty!

Basically, yes.
It's kind of same if you reveal text on PowerPoint presentation one line at a time instead of the entire slide at once.
