The phrase "kono yo" (this world) is used only in contrast to the phrase "ano yo," meaning the world beyond, or the afterlife.
"sekai" is the more general term to refer to "world," so this word can be used in phrases like "the world's population," "the energy crisis in the world," "the world of games," " the world of science,"  "the world of mechanical engineering," etc.

Konoyo is often used to express the world you are living, and Anoyo is for the world for dead. Anoyo e iku, means die.

Kono sekai is just this world.
