I found this packet, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it is.
Thanks for your help!

Thank you so much. That's definitely what it is now that I am looking it up.

I am trying to find information online about it and I was wondering if it is ever eaten plain as a snack. There really isn't any information saying that this is done, but at the same time it never says that this is necessarily a bad idea either.

Ummm. You "can" eat it as it is, but since it's shavings, you will find that it is very thin, real flakes, and might fly around as you try to eat it :) Please look at the descriptions under "Uses" in the wiki page.
