For a grieving friend 2013/9/12 08:26
My pen pal told me her beloved dog passed away last night. In English we would say something like "I'm so sorry for your loss, you must miss him very much" but what would be a culturally appropriate expression in Japanese? I feel really bad for her and don't want to say anything to make her more upset by sounding insensitive with clumsy Japanese.

One suggestion:

- Nakunatta wan-chan mo, kitto (friend's name)-san no kazoku de irarete, shiawase datta to omoimasu. Go-meifuku wo oinori shimasu.
[I am sure that the doggy that passed away was happy to have been (your friend's name)'s family. May he/she rest in peace. ]

A friend of my wrote me those words when I lost a dear pet some time ago, and helped me a great deal, so I thought this might help your friend too.
