Women's advice on finding clothes 2013/9/16 10:19
Alright, so I've been doing some research on clothing sizes in Japan and I wanted to know whether I will have a hard time finding anything.

My pants size is usually a size 10/11 or a U.S. size M and sometimes L depending on the brand/cut.

My shirt size is U.S. size Medium.

Worst off is my shoe size! Size 11 is going to be so hard for me when it comes to finding decent looking women's shoes that can actually fit. I'll probably have to settle for cute boy shoes at the time being. I even heard that most local shoe stores don't sell anything above 8.5 (or was it 7.5?) I'm officially screwed!

(in inches)
By the way my breast size is: 38DD
Waist:28.5 in.
Hips:39 in.

So other than the shoes being a MAJOR problem. Will I be able to easily find clothes that fit my size? I'm also 5'7'' so will I also have a problem finding clothes height wise as well?

Do you also have any suggestions for stores that sell shoes for large sized feet? Or possibly for large bra sizes?

About the size conversion, these list may help.
(The second list tells you how you can roughly conver the US size into JP size.)

We use metric measurement, you can convert inch into cm here:
http://www.metric-conversions.org/length/inches-to-centimeters.htm

Average size in clothes is size 9 and 11, you can find them both in almost every shop. 5-7 are regarded as petit size, 13 and upwards is big, if you go to department stores, you'll find petit/big size corners offering many different brands. You'll find size 7-13 easily, but size beyond this area are rather hard to find in ordinary shops. (Usually size 15-17 fits me and I always go to Isetan department in Shinjuku, as they have a huge area for my size, called 'Clover size'. They offer something very fashionable.

I'm not sure about pants size but judging from your bra size, tops (shirts, jacket) of size 15-17 may fit you, though it depends on the cuts.

As to shoes,I'm afraid that you'll need to go to a specialised shops. Average size here is 23 - 24cm. Most shops carries womens shoes up to 24.5 or 25cm (size 8). 25cm has far less variety compared with 24.5cm. Even men have difficulties to find size beyond 27.5 - 28cm (9.5 to 10inch), you'd better bring the shoes that fit you.

5'7" is 170cm, yes, it's much taller than average, some department stores carries 'tall size', like Isetan.

So basically they sell things from a xSmall to a size Medium in U.S. sizes. I think I'll be able to manage then.

I'm moving to Tokyo in a couple of months, and I've done extensive research on this. I'm slightly smaller than you sometimes a 6, usually an 8, but I'm quite tall (5'9.5"/176cm).

What I've gather is that while there ARE size 10s available almost everywhere, these are NOT American' size tens. Most stores care up to a US 6, sometimes a size 8. Size 8, for example, is a Japanese 11.

However, if you shop places like Uniqlo, Forever 21, etc, they carry some larger sizes. If your in one of the larger cities, particularly Tokyo, you should be able to locate some. I'm hoping so too, but I'm bringing quite a few pants with me (as well as a few a size or two down from my current size, since I hear most people lose weight but are still unable to find a pant that fits them.)

I prefer to shop online. Amazon is my fav shop. It's very convenient and doesn't take much time. But when you shop online it is necessary to check carefully the adress you write and the size chart. Last time I wrote the wrong postal code and my parcel was lost. Now I always check it here http://worldpostalcode.com/japan/ before making any purcases.

I'm a size 12 in the US, bra size is 38D and height is 5'4". On my trips to Japan, I've managed to buy tops from Uniqlo. I usually buy L or XL but for tops with wide/loose styles I can get away with M. Pants/jeans tend to be difficult in Uniqlo as I have big thighs and I've only managed to try 2 bottoms which fit me (both were shorts though, no luck with jeans). Skirts should be ok for you. I think you should bring shoes and bra from your own country and not expect to find a lot of selection of these in Japan. Another thing, don't expect to be able to buy rings/bracelets in Japan as Japanese women have very slim fingers and thin wrists.
