We'll be traveling around japan for 5 weeks; we need an opinion as to whether we should rent a month portable wifi or not? I know that some hotel offers LAN Internet but we decided not to take a laptop with us.
And what company should be rent the wifi from? We'll travel from Tokyo all the way down to Fukuoka.
Any help would be appreciated.

What are your intention to use the wifi, outdoors or indoor at the hotel, as you have mention about the hotel, you can purchase a travel router which is very cheap and plug direct to the lan cable for short distance wifi.

Mostly for checking emails and communicating with family. However I also want to be able to use outdoor as well while walking around town or searching for things or directions.
Only some hotels have LAN line. On that note, where can I buy that LAN line box (the one you mentioned). Thanks.

where i live i can get a data sim for about 3000yen for 15GB data for use upto 7 days on softbank
Can you post more info on this? I very curious about this considering Softbank generally doesn't sell prepaid data, and in the cases that they do it tends to be more expensive than the competition.

Thanks for the link. So if I understand it correctly, its a sim offered by China Unicom that allows international roaming in Japan via a partner agreement with Softbank?

Hi, we rented a portable router from www.japan-wireless.com. They delivered to our hotel in Tokyo and it costs US$120 for 5 weeks. They have a couple different options - we chose one that could power 5 devices. They also have SIM cards but we didn't do that. We're three weeks into our trip and its been fine. I'd recommend you go with the LTE vs 3G option - we just wish we'd done that for better streaming when multiple devices are connected.

The portable Wi-Fi® hotspot feature allows you to share your mobile devicefs data connection with other devices by turning your device into a wireless access point. You can connect up to 8 wireless devices via Wi-Fi.

if anyone is after these sakura data card to use in japan.
the prices have now been reduced to HKD 200/2550 yen, it's available for people who is travaling from in hong kong.
the card is a micro usim and is issued by Softbank, and sold in hong kong under china Unicom, this card is not a roaming card as I thought it was, it is a pre paid data card and works only in japan and needs to be activated in japan.
details of the card is 15GB of data use under Softbank 3G network for upto 7 Days, the card has a dead line, and the 7 days of use must end before the last day of December beijing time.
The cost is around HKD230/3050yen - HKD200.2550yen, cheapest place is buying from sham shui po
anyone from hong kong who intends to visit japan should consider this card, you can PM me if interested so that I can tell you which shop in shamshui po sells them cheap.

Are all of these options available for a US (locked) iphone 4?
I am traveling to Tokyo for just 4 days, then Korea (2 days) and China for 11 days. I NEED some sort of portable wifi or anything that will let me have internet access on my iPhone at all times (use of maps, translator apps, and skype). Econnect looked great and they are out of stock. Sould I just get to tokyo and visit the counters in Terminal 1? Or will those prices be higher than if booking online? If there is one that works with iphone and I can use in China, that would be great......have no idea where to do this with SIM cards in China, or anywhere. HELP!

Only the options for renting portable wifi devices will work with a locked iphone. Prepaid sim cards will not work.
If econnect is out of stock try global advance or just rent something at the airport.
