Use nano SIM or Pocket wifi?

Hi all,
Next year I will go to Japan for an exchange student program for about 4 months. I plan to use my iphone 5s there and right now I consider 2 options to connect my phone to the internet, using japan's nano sim card or simply rent pocket wifi. (Basically I need the internet connection more than the voice call)
Can someone give me suggestion which one should benefit me more? Big thanks for the help !!

It is rather complicated because you need a credit card for signing up a contract. And it takes some time ( one or two weeks). Big Camera is offering one month contracts. You need to order it online (nano sim only). Without a credit card you can not buy anything online. ;)
Wifi contracts - I don't know their offers.
