Must have apps for trip to Japan 2014/1/20 17:47
Hi,

I'm going for a 12 day trip to Japan in April. What are some very useful or must-have apps that I can use during that time?

I know Hyperdia is very handy. What about language, sightseeing, or restaurant apps?

Thanks!

one super very useful app i used in japan is "MetrO".

once you get it, you can decide to download different city metro maps. basically is a navigator for metro. just decide from station A to station B and it shows all the different route you can choose between. super cool things is that it's free and works offline!!!

this is for iphone:

https://itunes.apple.com/it/app/metro/id320949132?mt=8

and this is instruction for android:

http://metro.nanika.net/index.php?p=Z

and of course, offline map. this is what i used the most!!!

enjoy!

Maps are all around, and tourist info offices are generally really good (and easy to find).

Honestly, one of the things I love about being on hoilday is the change to turn my phone off. In 5 trips to Japan, I've never felt the lack of a telephone.

I haven't used these as I am still planning my trip to Japan, but I like the post office and 7 eleven locator apps too help you find ATMs. I use the map to find them as everything is in Japanese. Just pick any location and then scroll around.

If you are going to Disney land there its an app that is supposed to tell you current line up times.

The Tokyo and Kyoto trip advisor guide apps have interesting looking walking tours that are easy to find

If you have internet access on your phone at all times, Hyperdia or Japan Trains can be invaluable as an app. I live here and use both of these all of the time...

I second "winter visitor"! At work I had to use a pager + a work cell phone + a desk phone...not to mention the e-mail, also for work purposes, so I loved to be phone free on holidays...

I never had a problem finding my way around Tokyo, Kyoto Osaka etc. or Paris, London, Shanghai etc. with a very basic paper map as helper.

If I needed some unusual info once in a blue moon, I used a hotel computer for a short while in the evening or early morning.

My favourite app while I was in Japan was a GPS logger. They record where you were during the day. Was useful when walking around the Tokyo so we could go back to that small shop/restaurant/stall we stumbled across but would not been able to find again if we didn't log it. Every morning I would turn them on and put the iPad in my backpack. Every night when we got back to the hotel I turned it off.

Here's a few we used:
https://itunes.apple.com/en/app/trails-gps-tracker/id289190494?mt=8

https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/gaia-gps-topo-maps-trails/id329127297?...

https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/gps-kit-hd/id418662204?mt=8

(sorry, AU links :))

I think there are also apps that log GPS like the above, but you can also take a photo and record on the same map where it was taken. I know iPhoto does this, but iPhoto just records where the photo was taken, not the whole day.
