Transporting Knifes

So I plan to be heading to Tokyo next month for a 2 1/2 month stay. I've noted the Knife law nothing over 6cm, But I would Really love to buy a set of hand made kitchen knifes and maybe something to add to my Asia collection.
My question is how do I transport them from where i buy them to my apartment? I plan to log them as checked luggage or FedEx them home I haven't decided on that part yet.
As for price that's not an issue, however getting them home without any trouble would be nice.

Hmmm... you might want to check with your Country Of Origin for importing laws. You may HAVE to ship them back, because obviously something like that would not be allowed in your carry-on luggage on the plane. I don't know how they would react if you wanted to take it back in your checked baggage either.
I know that the CBSA in Canada says you HAVE to declare all weapons, but I don't know if a kitchen knife counts as a weapon. Probably best to contact your Border Services office and ask them, because if you get the wrong officer on the wrong day coming back from Japan, they won't care that you've spent $300 on one nice santoku. They'll confiscate it, and you'll be out the knife, and the money.

It's prohibited as a cabin baggage to carry knives but you can carry as a checked in baggage with safety holder in. Ask your airlines for more info. All regulations are slightly different airlines to the others.

I know I can import almost any knife to where I live.
As for not carrying knifes on board a plane that is a given, that is why I plan to have it in checked luggage.
My original question is still in effect. Is there any special steps I need to take after I buy a knife to get it to my place of residence in Tokyo or can I just transport it in a shopping bag etc.?

Have you considered having the store mail or ship them for you ?
Would save you some worry at the airport. Some stores might be happy to do that for you, especially with a large purchase. You can offer to pay the cost of mailing and handling. Also be sure to insure them.

No problem just carrying it home with you. Transporting recently purchased knives is an acceptable reason to have a knife in your possession.

We have bought Kitchen usage knives in Tokyo on each of our 5 trips. We transport them in the shops bags, no problems. When returning to our country, Australia, we put them in our CHECKED baggage, and DECLARE them on the customs declaration form when entering Australia, for personal usage. Neither issue has ever been a problem.
