Using Japanese iPhone in UK

I'm returning from Japan and would like to take advantage of the cheaper mobiles there. I will be returning to the UK.

Would there be any issue in buying a SIM-free iPhone 5s in Japan and using it with a UK SIM card?

It should be ok. The model sold sim free in Japan should be the A1453 which works on the major UK wireless carriers.

Note that sim-free phones are not particularly cheap, but you'll still save roughly 100 pounds over buying in the UK.
