First death anniversary

A close business associate/friend passed away and the first death anniversary is coming up. Is there something we can do/say to the family to convey our thoughts/remembrance of this occasion? We are not in Japan so will it be appropriate to send a card/ email and if so, are there any customary phrases, etc we should include or avoid. What is the custom surrounding this event. Any insights will be much appreciated. Thanks

A commemorating someone's death letter or card is fine. Your writing must respect someone's death. Not many Japanese workers/co-workers even do these days, the family is happy to receive from you.
