Bugs in june to september 2014/5/18 14:50
I will be traveling round Japan during summer.

I read that roach problem are serious enough that the news have infestation reports like weather reports during summer. And that no matter how clean a place is, they are just everywhere in summer? Is that true? I will be staying in not only hotels but also normal households.

A lot of the recommended sightseeing places are outdoor like castle trail or parks. I understand that being outdoor, insects are a given but aside from mosquitos are they any other pesky bloodsuckers?

Lastly, i will be traveling around a lot and most probably even to rural places. Is the giant hornet only found in some places or are they all over Japan?

Must be a misunderstanding and/or sensationalization. Such reports are not common, at all.

No. I see an average of 1-2 cockroaches per year. I stay at dozens of hotels each year and live in the countryside.

There are leeches in some forests of Japan. But I have never come across one in years of hiking through the country.

Pretty much nationwide outside the urbanized areas, I believe. But again, you are very unlikely to get across them. I have only come across a few inhabited nests in years of hiking and living in the countryside. And was never attacked.

That depends on what you're comparing them with. In the 4.5 years of living in L.A., I never saw a cockroach while in Japan I see at least 2 each year. But I've heard of worse horror stories about New York, though.

And that no matter how clean a place is, they are just everywhere in summer?

Some people who live in upper floors of condominiums say they never get them, even though they keep the windows open and cook in their kitchen. I've never seen any in top notch hotels, but then they never have rooms in lower floors. I remember getting them when we used to live on the 10th floor, but then, because of the environment of that place, we got so many bugs that our window screen used to turn green.

But roaches do you no harm. They're just yucky to look at, that's all.

are they any other pesky bloodsuckers?

If you are going to rural places, you might want to watch out for gnats which are bugs as tiny as a dot, but when stung, it swells up as big as a baseball and it itches like hell for weeks.

You can easily avoid them by covering your skin especially when you are standing outside at places with few people. Either way, locals are eduated to wear long sleaves/pants when hiking in the mountains. There's all kinds of risks there then you'd think.

If stung by anything nasty, you can go to a drug store for advice. You can communicate with drawings if language is a problem. Qualified pharmacists wear white lab coats.

Giant hornets or any kinds of bees can be avoided easier, because they're much more visible and louder.

Otherwise, summer is a great season and the other half of the insects are good, lovely ones.

Hope you have fun!

Cicada is noisy everywhere on trees in Japan. Each variety makes their own sound. It is the symbol of summer in Japan. They stay underground for 15 yrs and climb up trees , out of shell, making noise attracting mates and die in a few days. They are small to big but harmless and if they fly into your room, catch and/or escort out. They usually pee on you.
Mozy is everywhere, especially in the dark/shaded area. Bush mozy has stripes and very itchy, if bitten.
There are other bugs but mostly harmless.
