Barrel ceremony

Several years ago I attended a ceremony around new year. It was in a remote small buddhist temple and there wasn't anything unsual about until one of the monk got up and poured rice into a small barrel. Almost instantly a deep humming sound started that became eardeafing at its peak.
Does anybody what ceremony or part is called? I've been wondering how it works.
