I see the word koto alot in japanese sentences and phrases, but I tried to translate it and it says it means "thing" but I don't think so, I need help please.

There are several different words with the reading koto, but the most common one means thing (in a non-physical or non-tangible sense) or fact. It's used to describe activities, used to convert verbs to nouns, and also used for a number of different grammar structures.
