Watch a good sumo fight and geisha show 2015/3/13 07:17
Hello,
We are traveling to Japan on cherry blossom season and we really want to watch a sumo fight and a geisha show.
We are going to stay in all major cities (Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka).
Where can we watch those? Maybe in another city?
Please recommend us!
Thank you very much,
Michael

They don't have any major sumo tournament in April (by the way it's sumo "match" :)).

For a casual viewing, Gion Corner in Kyoto will have some geisha performances.

You mentioned "cherry blossom season" but didn't provide any dates - when are you planning to travel?

Assuming you'll be in Japan this April...

1) As noted in the previous comment, no official tournaments are held in April. The 2015 sumō schedule is here:

2) Kyōto's Miyako Odori is probably the grandest geisha performance out there, and it's only held every April. More details below:

Cheers.

The Miyoko Odori in Kyoto is probably the best example of a Geisha performance in Japan.

I went there a few years ago with my parents and found it quite boring - but others may enjoy it. You also need o be specific about dates in Japan. Remember that the "Real" cherry blossom season is only around 5-7 days in a specific location and of course changes depending on the weather.

Kyoto is normally a good place to go due to difference in elevation. Differences in elevation means a few weeks difference in the trees being in full bloom....
