Japanese Sweets 2015/3/19 07:08
I like to bring back for a close friend some candies/sweets that is special and not found in the States. I know many department stores in Osaka and Tokyo carry all kind of sweets but I like some recommendations from those who have done this. Thanks.

What kind of "recommendation" are you looking for? You're just buying stuff at the supermarket...

It's hard to tell whether the Asian supermarkets in your area sell the same products or not. To avoid this, I usually buy the sweets at the airport before I leave or pick up some kit kats. Those are usually not found in the supermarkets in my area.

My recommendation is "Cigare from Yokumoku"
http://www.yokumoku.co.jp/products/cigare.html
You can find Yokumoku shops at major department stores, railway stations and airports.

My other recommendation is "Shiseido Parlour Sable"

Shiseido is well known brand as a cosmetic company but is also operate restaurant business. But the store is only limited location mainly in Tokyo large department stores.

You can bring back "KitKat maccha" for your minor friends which you can be purchased at major supermarkets around 300 yen.

I personally find that the special flavor kit kats works a treat.

There are many different flavors which sometimes can only be found in certain locations or certain events.

I've had everything from strawberry cheesecake, apple and even passionfruit flavor!

Most true Japanese Sweets are not that sweet but can be a bit of an acquired taste (mocchi!!). However - once you learn to like them they are VERY addictive....

It's possible to get just about anything via the net nowadays from ebay etc. What makes stuff special, regardless of what it is, is that you got it for your friend.

KitKats are good but any konbini will have some classic Japanese sweets with characters on them like Doraemon.

For something more exotic, head to Candy Alley in Kawagoe.

I brought some wagashis(japanese traditional sweets) for friends abroad.

By bringing such sweets, you may bring the feeling you can catch in this season.

I suppose you can get unique sweets by internet now.
