Onsen in Mid-April - Hakone or Kusatsu

So I'm doing some last minute trip planning and have 3 days to kill during my two week trip in mid april. I've never been to an onsen before and am debating between Hakone or Kusatsu.
I was leaning towards Kusatsu but it looks like the Sainokawara Rotemburo may/may not be open.
Any advice?

Kusatsu has many other onsens available.
Kusatsu has a more traditional feel about it, and it is fun to go onsen hopping.
Hakone is more of a tourist spot with views of Fuji and a lake.
