Good Purely Japanese Vocabulary book? 2015/4/3 18:56
I looking for a Japanese vocabulary book. I would like a nice thick book that has both hiragana and kanji readings. I do not want a beginners guide to kanji or any guide to kanji.

What I'm looking for.

- purely vocabulary (I have more than enough text books)
- extensive - many definitions
- with good full sentence examples
- with convenient search methods
- with grammatical marks (i.e. parts of speech). The more the better.
- contemporary
- with readings of hiragana with kanji

This is more commonly called a dictionary...

A dctionary is more for translating, not learning words.

go to large bookstores like Kinokuni-ya.
you will find out Japanese dictionaries for pupils, 国語辞典, kokugo-jiten.
there are a wide range from lower grade of elementary school, higher grade of elementary school, and more higher levels.

Even though the name says "kanji," it would help you a lot with vocabulary as it lists words containing certain kanji and gives the meanings. "Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary" and "Kodansha Essential Kanji Dictionary."

maybe something like 日本語単語スピードマスター is what you're after?

I've used that series for ages now and it comes with a CD for practice by ear also

I have also used the 日本語単語スピードマスター series. Some of the words overlap, but I say theyre worth the $10 or so. Theyre broken up on themes. They provide the word, furigana, a sentence, and definition. The 語彙 books for the soumatome series are also pretty good too.
