Buying cigarettes in Japan

I will be travelling shortly to Japan and I smoke 1mg cigarettes here in Australia. Can anyone tell me which brand to look for as I believe most packaging is written in Japanese and I am not sure which brands would be the lowest mg. Also, it appears that I will not be able to purchase any packets from the vending machines as I will only be there for 3 weeks and do not have the necessary identification card for these machines. Can anyone help with the right information please?

Hi and thank you for your quick response. The problem is that cigarettes in Australia cost AUD $135.00 per carton with only 10% discount tax free. I understand they are much cheaper in Japan costing around 2000 to 3000 yen per carton. I can purchase nearly 4 times the amount by buying them in Japan. I just didn't want to purchase stronger cigarettes than I'm used to. Can I still purchase them without an identity card?

Smoking is prohibited under age of 20 in Japan. Purchase ciggy from vending machine require ID card TASPO, however you can buy at convenience store, supermarket or Tabacco shop without using TASPO. You will be required to show some identification if the shop need age confirmation, that is if you look young or underage.

Horizon White which is 1 mg. Unfortunately here, it is cheaper to get drunk rather than smoke! Go figure! Even duty free back into Australia, we are only permitted to bring in 50 cigarettes per person and pay the full price for any more we purchase.

Please don't be dismissive of the taxes on cigarettes here in Australia. It is done for a very good reason: to encourage people to stop smoking. This is beneficial to the community as a whole: people who stop smoking can see dramatic improvements in their health, and there is less second-hand smoke for non-smokers to breathe in.
I highly approve of our laws and taxes on smoking. If you don't like the cost, stop smoking - simple. I'm not telling you to give it up, but don't complain about Australia's laws if you want to continue the habit by choice.

Hi Guest. I totally agree with you. It is my choice to smoke and it is a costly and bad habit. I was only making a general remark with regards the way the taxes are placed on these 2 items. People also have a choice to drink alcohol or not but with regards safety, I personally feel more injuries are caused from alcohol than cigarette smoke. I personally have doubts about second hand smoke but I'm not a doctor so we are all guided by their conclusions. Hopefully I'll have the courage to quit soon! It can only be a good thing for everyone. Thanks for your opinion though. It was a good point.
