Basashi (horse sashimi) in Tokyo 2015/6/27 18:44
Hi, I'll be traveling to Tokyo for the this year end and hope to be able to try it this time.

I have only found 1 or 2 locations which is quite far. I suppose the nearest one is in Kawagoe (which my friend visited). And have even watched a youtube video which said basashi can even be bought from supermarket! I would love to visit those supermarkets!

I will be staying in Asakusa area, so was wondering if u guys have any place to recommend nearby?

It's quite tough to find shops in Tokyo (being a tourist) so I would greatly appreciate if u could include nearest station and maybe map can be attached too. =)

Thank you very much for your recommendations!

Hi. Cant help you with Tokyo, but I had it at Uematsuya at Bessho Onsen which is great for a night away, and very reasonably priced.

The horse sashimi itself is quite tough, I've had it a few times. I wouldnt rave at all, in fact I dont think I'll eat it again. Beef sashimi is much nicer, IMO.

Horse sashimi - like beef sashimi - comes in various degrees of toughness. Some of it is extremely tender. Maybe you should give it another try...

Next to Asakusa area, in north, there is famous Sakuranabe Nakae 桜なべ中江 in Yoshiwara district, founded in 1905.

Shop of Kumamoto cuisine, there are a plurality in Tokyo.
Individual horse sashimi seems reputable.

Hi all,
Thank you all so much for the information! Is horse sashimi tougher than beef one?

Are they both (beef and horse sashimi) usually sold in the same shop? If so, I would like to have them both! My friends tried the horse sashimi and said it's really nice...

Thanks for the suggestions and website too! I might try the one near asakusa =) But I'll try to use the google translate on the site and what comes up..

How about supermarkets in tokyo? Know of any near asakusa that sells this?

Depends on the cut and quality of the meat. I've had tender cuts of both and I've had tough cuts of both, however generally both are very tender especially compared to cooked meat.

Not usually, but sometimes places like izakaya might have both on the menu. Horse sashimi is best eaten at a horse restaurant or at a restaurant specializing in Kumamoto cuisine.

It is, and one of my favorite Japanese foods!

Bakuro in Kanda is a horsemeat specialist. I've been to their branch in Ebisu, but they do very nice sashimi as well as excellent grilled horsemeat, so I think the Kanda branch will have the same menu and the same high quality.
