how to interpretate correctly a Kanji?

At the moment I'm studying the Japanese kanjis, but I'm having some problems. I study some kanjis and I have been memorizing their On'yomi and Kun'yomi meanings, but When they are with another kanjis I can't understand what that group of kanjis could mean. I also know that I'm able to join the On'yomi and Kun'yomi of kanjis to form words, which became more dificult. What should I do to be capable to understand what the kanjis mean when they are together?

Exactly the same thing you do to understand what letters mean when they are together: look it up in a dictionary.
