During my past journeys in Japan I have noticed there seem to be a lot of sugar consumed, both as part of regular cooking and as much confectionaries, sugar bread (melonpan), drinks, etc.
I might have just seen those overconsuming sugar but considering this, is diabetes a problem in Japan?

Yes, diabetes is a problem in Japan, but I don't think we usually consume as much sugar as they commonly do in the U.S. And not all people in Japan consume confectionery every day, and a lot of Japanese households don't use sugar for their stews and fries.
