Chigau and Machigau

What is the difference between machigau and chigau? I heard chigau means "wrong" and machigau is "mistaken" or "to make a mistake". So are they interchangable? Then which and what would i use and say for "wrong number" and "I answered a question wrongly/got a question wrong"
And what is the difference between machigau, machigai, and machigae? Really hope someone can help me with this, I'm confused and its bugging me.

Hi:) I'm a native Japanese speaker but not a specialist.
We can say ' machigatteiru number' or ' chigau number'. (Actually number was mistaken but ' machigaerareta number' is not natural expression) Someone makes a 'mistake' and the number become 'wrong'.
Someone machigau(verb) and the number is ' chigau(adjective)'

"chigau" means different. "chigau kotae" is a different answer. "hito chigai" is a wrong but different person. "machigau" means to make an error. or be wrong. If I say "machigai masita", it means I made an error or I was wrong. "machigai denwa" means a wrong phone call. "machigae+te" is in error. "machigaete denwa shita/shimasita" is I made a wrong phone call or punched phone numbers in error. "machigatta kotaeta" is a wrong answer.
