Marriage in japan 2016/5/12 01:13
Hi may I know what are the documents required to get a certified marriage cert in Japan. We are both Malaysian and would be doing a small ceremony in mount Fuji and head to Tokyo to continue our trip there.

Simple ceremony , religous or whatsoever ceremony do not legitimate your marriage.
In Japan all marriage need to be done/register at municipal office e.g. cityhall.

For two foreigners not a resident in Japan, to register their marriage/get married read above post.
Check with relevant cityhall for more details.

Appreciate the kind help and reply. I can't read Japanese as the webs are in Japanese. I'll try to use goggle translate and convert the web and run through.
Yes we are Malaysians and would like to get a cert from Japan to acknowledge our marriage in Japan. However I will only be doing a small gathering in Mount Fuji and hopefully I can proceed the traditional marriage in komitake shrine there.
Do I have to go to the city hall in Tokyo to give the documents or I can do it in Mount Fuji itself ? Our trip is from Osaka to Mount Fuji and then to Tokyo.

No judgement but just interested... why, as Malaysians, do you want a marriage certificate from Japan?

I mean, I can understand wanting to have some kind of Japanese style ceremony while on holiday but going through all the bureaurocratic hoops that'll be required to get the paperwork in Japan and again to have the marriage recognized in Malaysia seems like a lot of effort for what purpose..?!

legal processes vary depending on nations.
OP should understand that the minimum process to get married in Japan is the registration of marriage at city office.

as suggested by Saru Bob,
getting married in Malaysia and taking a ceremony in Japan will be a practical and easy way to do.

Thanks for the advice saru bob. If we were to just marry in Malaysia and do the ceremony in Japan. Will there be a cert given there being recognized back here in Malaysia ? Cuz I actually want our cert to be special and recognized in Japan too if possible. Sorry if it sounds dumb. 😁

Re: Marriage in japan 2016/5/13 09:59
It doesn't sound dumb. Unfortunately, any marriage ceremony done in Japan is purely ceremonial, so the only legally recognized marriage would be one done at city hall.

If you were to do a legal marriage in Japan then at a minimum you'll need to hire a translator, fill out a bunch of paperwork, and pay a visit to your embassy to get a certificate of no impediment before heading over to a city hall to process the paperwork, not to mention gathering the necessary documents from Malaysia before arriving. Takes about a day of visiting government offices, and a rather uneventful signing of papers to make everything official. It is possible, but most people probably skip it for just the ceremony.

Recognised legal cert only issue at cityhall upon marriage registration.
You need that as proof to register with JPN.

Ceremonies are for show only.

ducaes,

All legal marriages performed in Japan are by default registered at the city hall.

Yllwsmrf,

Yes I know that.

Pardon my English if you misread/misunderstood.

JPN is abbreviation for Malaysia Department Of National Registration.
Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, OP would have understood it, I think ...

Re: Marriage in japan 2016/5/14 11:49
A wedding in Japan can get really expensive! For my wedding I went with the rental company suggested by the shrine, although you are free to shop around. The basic dress/makeup/hair plan which included both bride and groom was around 100000. The hakama rental was around 30000-40000, I can't remember exactly. I chose a mid-range uchikake (mine was ivory as opposed to pure white, the whiter the more expensive) that was maybe around 120000 or so. The wig added another 30000 I think. I also provided kimono for my mom and step-mom, but arranged for hair and dress with the company, so that was 30000 for the both of them.

You could probably get away with the absolute cheapest uchikake and hakama, but you're still probably looking at at least 200000 including the dressing. However this probably depends a lot on the place; my rental company was Tokyo-based, so other places outside the big city might be cheaper.
