Japan Guide says the there is no GSM network in Japan. However T-Mobile (a GSM only networks in the US) says that their phones work in Japan. And I see one can get Japanese SIM cards, which I thought were only for GSM networks. Can someone explain?

T-Mobile is not a GSM-only network. They primarily operate on 3G and LTE, so their handsets are mostly compatible with the Japanese networks.

Sim cards are not a GSM only technology. They are also used with 3G and LTE phones.

What is the phone model that you are planning on using in Japan? If it is a recent model and unlocked then it is highly likely that it will work here.
