Entry Questions 2016/5/13 14:15
I hope you guys n gals and point me in the right direction.
I purchased a honeymoon vacation for our 5th anniversary to japan.
I had no idea that entry laws even existed!
It is our first Real International Vacation.
The Mrs thinks we are going to Canada, where our connecting flight is :)

I have a misdemeanor that is 9 years old, and does not involve drugs, alcohol, or violence.

I read the "Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act"; And section 5, part 4, states the following:

"(iv) A person who has been convicted of a violation of any law or regulation of Japan, or of any other country, and has been sentenced to imprisonment with or without work for 1 year or more, or to an equivalent penalty. However, this shall not apply to those convicted of a political offense "

My sentence was 1 year of jail time or 5 years of unsupervised probation, and a class.
I chose the probation and class.
I was never in jail.
It also appears my offense is not illegal in japan.

I have been researching for almost a week for a definitive answer.
I also called the Consular office and spoke to three people on separate days and received three answers: I do not know, should be fine, call this person XXXX. I have not received a call back in 2 days.

My Questions:
Would my conviction cause me to be denied entry?
Does probation count as an "equivalent penalty" to deny entry?
Would applying for a tourist visa be helpful?
I have a certificate from the class. Would that be helpful?
Is there anything i can do to guarantee entry?

Thank You!

Contact the Japanese Embassy in your home country. They're in the best position to advise you.
