Wall air con alternatives?

I need an air con for a 6 tatami room. The mansion set up is complicated and fitting is going to be crazy pricewise (new electric socket; 'safety' elec cable from the main power box to the air con; long external pipe run from fan to air con).
Is there an alternative way to get the piddling little room cool for the summer?
Can't use a window air con, since there's a metal grill on the outside of the window, so no space to fix the air con.
I've seen some free standing air cons (at least I think that's what they are) but they seem to be in the hundreds of thousands of yen, whereas I just need a cheappo air con for the small room.
Any advice welcome...

Great! Thanks so much for the info and links.
What, if any, is the difference between a cooler and an air con (just in terms of their simple function of cooling and keeping a low temp)?

For a small 6 tatami room. I would just get one of the smaller aircon units that plug into a normal power socket.

those ducting hose is to let out the excess/exhaust hot air. if you use it in an enclosed room, the hot air exhaust will just get recycle inside the room, making the cooling less efficient.
