What is this Japanese garment called? 2016/6/18 01:01
I went to a vintage kimono sale with my friend, who picked out a white silky kimono-style garment to try on. The store owner told her that it wasn't a kimono/yukata that required the obi or obijime, but instead tied it with a simple, strap-style belt/sash that was much thinner than a typical obi. It didn't require any special or elaborate folding at the back, hence the dress was much easier to put on than the yukata or kimono, which can be complicated for foreigners who don't know what they're doing.

What is the name of this style of Japanese dress, and what is the name of the belt used to tie it? I really want to learn more about this type of Japanese garment as it looks more casual and easier to wear than the kimono. Thank you!

If it was white and silky, I figure it's a white naga-juban.

Naga-juban is underwear, similar to what a slip is for modern Western woman's fashion. Since it's underwear, it's not meant to be worn in public.

But most kimonos that you see movie stars wearing in their movies as room wear is naga-juban, because many of the vintage ones are made with very gorgeously designed fabric. The Japanese used to think it was funny, but nowadays you can wear bras in public as part of punk fashion, so why not naga-juban.

White naga-juban is typically worn for formal attire, such as weddings and funerals. Nowadays they sell polyester ones, but if it was vintage it's most likely silk which is typically washed only by specialists. You usually just hang it in the air before putting it back in your drawer.

I don't know what kind of a belt it was, but perhaps it's a date-maki.

When wearing kimono, you're supposed to wear a hada-juban top and koshi-maki bottom directly on your skin, and then naga-juban and date-maki, and then the kimono you show in public along with an obi. If you want to wear a han-eri decorative collar, you sew it on the naga-juban.

Thanks for the info Uco! scarreddragon, It definitely looked like the first one but was made from higher quality material, and the belt was thicker and more elaborate (woven red and white). Like this:

Yup, it's definitely a nagajuban. That belt goes under the obi but over the koshi-himo as an extra hold for the more formal kimono styles. I've never heard of nagajuban being worn by itself, but my kimono teachers were of the old school variety!

Well, if it IS a "nagajuban," that is a piece of underwear (old style or not :)), so you cannot wear that by itself. You could wear it at home as a nightgown or a lounge wear, but not outside your home. I am a bit surprised that the seller did not tel you about it...

Jenn, the photo you provided says "date-maki" and, again, they're not meant to be shown in public.

Thanks everyone! I will warn my friend not to wear it in out public, hahaha. I'm also surprised that the seller didn't tell her that. Maybe she did and I didn't hear it, I was kind of doing my own thing while she was trying it on. I want to get one of my own to wear indoors, they're so pretty!

You learn something everyday!! I never knew their name.

I have two of them in my guest room wardrobe as guest robes. They are lovely, but I was aware they were underwear, but dressy enough to wear around the house after showering or bathing.

Thank you
