Mixed outdoor onsen by lake/mountains

Hi
We are a couple looking to bathe in outdoor onsen together, i.e. mixed sex outdoor onsen, set in nature by a lake / mountain. We were considering Takaragawa Onsen until we read about the caged bears and bear soup. The rooms there seem quite old too.
Is there any other nicer onsen with mixed outdoor bath that is not too far from Tokyo? With nicer more modern rooms?
