Cell phones in Japan

Hey there,
my name is Daniel and I am going to fly to Japan next October to stay there for a year abroad and I have a question regarding cell phones.
Since my old Samsung Galaxy S4 broke last week, I decided to buy myself a new one. But I am not sure if a normal cell phone I bought here in Germany can even be used in Japan, because I read a lot about different problems with foreign cell phones in Japan.
So, before I just go ahead and order a new Galaxy S4, I wanted to ask if I can even use it in Japan. If yes, is there anything else I need to know regarding cell phones in Japan? For example, it would also be helpful to know about cheap mobile tariffs - maybe even especially for foreigners, if there is anything like that.

Manchmal brauch man Japanischkenntnisse. Und vllt ne Kreditkarte fürs Set-up.
