Returning to Japan to finish high school 2016/8/8 22:17
Hi, our family will return to Japan, we all are japanese nationals but no speak japanese fluently. My elder son has just finished 4th year of secondary school, he will be 17 in september, I think is equivalent to 1st year of high school over there. How difficult it will be for him to go to high shool in Japan and finish his school years?

Attending a local school will be difficult if your son is not fluent in Japanese. However, there are internationals schools available that teach in English. It will depend on the area you move to.

First of all, people who become 17 in September normally belong to the second year of senior high school (koukou) in Japan. Typically, you graduate senior high as you finish your third year.

But senior high is not compulsory education. So you need to pass an entrance exam to enrol in a senior high school, and the level of high schools also vary.

Contrary to what many people might think, it's not that difficult to pass entrance exams for the easier senior highs. There are also public ones (meaning they're cheaper) including night schools and correspondence courses. In fact, you have numerous options. You don't even have to go to high school to obtain qualifications similar to a graduate. It's just that many of the options may not meet your preferences or needs.

Either way, you should discuss with the Board of Education of the area you plan to live in. Try to discuss things as early as possible, so that you can plan ahead. While you're at it, you should seek local support in Japan for returnees like your child.

Also keep in mind that places with more returnees doesn't necessarily mean that it's better.

Organizations like JETRO may help you get started.
