japanese food around Shinjuku 2005/3/23 04:44
I will stay in Shinjuku for 3 days. My husband and I are Japanese food lovers plus concern about the budget. So we agreed to eat all kinds of menu that local Japanese people daily have like ramen, curry with rice, sushi etc.

My questions are... how much will it cost in general for two meals a day? and In case of desperation, can I find japanese food in Malls?

cheap restaurants around shinjuku 2005/3/23 09:37
For Ramen and curry you can eat very good ones around shinjuku for less than 1000 yens a meal. if you go to kaitenzushi ya you can eat very cheap sushis also, though they aren't usually very good...

Shinjuku is the best place for eating cheaply. There are hundreds of restaurants where you can get a decent meal for below 1000 Yen.

Your choices include ramen, udon, curry rice, domburi and more. Many of these cheap restaurants are of the type where you buy a coupon at the vending machine and then sit at the counter.

Of course, if you have a budget of up to 2000 Yen per person and meal, your choices further diversify dramatically.

Can you recommend some restaurants? 2005/3/24 10:55
Uji,

Can you recommend any economical restaurants in the Shinjuku area? I always stay at the Keio Plaza when in Shinjuku and know there are a lot of choices for cheap eats, but being a foreigner, I really don't know where to go. I'd appreciate any recommendations.
And don't worry...I won't blame you for a bad choice.
Thanks.

I personally like the Sanuki Udon noodle restaurant "Mentsudan". It is very cheap. I particularly like the Mentama set with mentaiko fish eggs and a raw egg. I am getting very hungry by just thinking about it. There is a map here:

Almost across the street is "Menya Musashi", one of my favorite ramen shops, but expect to line up for 20 to 60 minutes, and don't go there if you don't like the fatty type of ramen soups:

And then there are countless faceless chain domburi and curry rice stores such as Yoshinoya and Sukiya. Most of them have menus with pictures and prices outside.

Thanks 2005/3/25 13:36
for the recommendations. I've printed them and definitely plan to visit these places when in Shinjuku.
I also plan to visit piss alley (finally). I've seen glimpses of it but I guess I was too afraid to eat there. But now that I am learning the Japanese language, anything is possible.
Thanks, again.

My favorite:

Okinawan cuisine Yanbaru
http://ramen.gnavi.co.jp/shop/jp/g553500n.htm

Set meals (mainly Okinawan noodles) less than 1000 yen.

Don't be surprised at ukon-cha (turmeric tea), which may taste like medicine at first :-)

There is another branch (restaurant style) in a bit distant place, which is good for eating Okinawan cuisine a la carte and drinking alcohol in a group in the evening.

Vincinty of Keio Plaza 2008/3/27 09:46
Directly opposite Keio Plaza (the back entrance which you use to walk to the Shinjuku station), are many relatively cheap restaurants that you can try. Coming out from the hotel, if you walk straight, you will soon come to a restaurant that sells typical Japanese food such as udon, sukiyaki, tempura. Its pretty good and cheap and popular with hotel guests.
