Extra days after Nozawa Onsen, Feb?

So I'm toying with the idea of going to Nozawa Onsen in mid-Feb for a week of skiing (have a minshuku sorted for 6 nights).
However, I'm not sure about going all the way to Japan just for Nozawa Onsen, so was pondering what else I could do in the general area... General plan is to fly in & out of Tokyo, so somewhere between Tokyo & Nozawa Onsen? I'm not adverse to buying the JR East Nagano Niigata pass perhaps.
However, not much seems to catch my eye...
* Kusatsu Onsen sounds nice, but sounds like a bit of a trip - and I'm already going to an onsen town for a week.
* Fuji Five Lakes (never been to Fuji!) is a tempting thought, but not exactly ideally located. Ditto for Shirakawa-go (stayed one night there a few years ago - loved it, very peaceful).
* That said, I've only just stumbled across the Tokamachi snow festival, which is a thought...
Any other suggestions? Thanks!
