It will depend on the frequencies the phone supports, which can vary depending on the model. Do you have a specific Xiaomi phone in mind?

Looks like there's several variants of the Redmi Note 4 - all of them support at least some of the UMTS (3G) bands used in Japan, and some of them support some of the LTE (4G) bands.
