Hello,
I will be visiting Japan in late September and would love to watch a Sumo match with a local in Tokyo. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

As sumo is very popular recently, tickets will be sold out soon. So it would be better to purchase on the first day of ticket sales.

Well, if you are Tokyo on the 3rd Saturday of September you could go to a Sumo event at the Setagaya Hachimangu. I tried to find details, but didn't get them. Your hotel might be able to help. But I think it's the 3rd Saturday in the early afternoon. http://setagaya339.net/s100k/021_030/030_setagaya.htm https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gojVyg52Y2wIt is in the purpose built Sumo arena of a local shrine in Setagaya under big trees. It's free and actually a lot of fun. It's not traditional Sumo but the atmosphere with the matsuri around, people picknicking on the slopes of the arena and a relaxed attitude is really great. I remember it took about 1 h, so be there on time and better bring some sheet on which to sit as the slopes can be muddy. Enjoy your trip to Japan!
