Hi There,
Is it a good idea to get Hakone free pass and visit on New Year Day? I'm worried that most places will be close?

Hakone is a leisure spot. Most places should be open and crowded. Especially, Hakone Shrine would be highly crowded with Hatsu-Moude. Gotemba Premium Outlets would also be highly crowded with Hatsu-Uri. Firewalk festival at 0:00 on the new years day. There will be Hakone Ekiden during 2-3 January. Many fans will be coming to Hakone to see that. Hakone in the new year period would be in a highly festive mode. Major museums are all open even on 1 January. If you want to visit many places efficiently in a day, that might not be done because of possible traffic jams. Single tickets might be better if that happened. http://www.hakone-ryokan.or.jp/blog/blog/2012/12/26/1711/
